Here are three tips pertaining supporting local farmers: * Tile drainage, clearing and leveling of farmland, as well as building an unpaved road, can be expensed in the year such payments are made or any portion carried forward to future years. However, land improvements on farmland rented out to another farmer/producer do not qualify for this deferral. * Alternative energy projects under Ontario's MicroFIT program have been deemed by the CRA not to be incidental farm income. Revenue and expenses related to solar and wind energy production under this program must be reported on a separate business schedule using the accrual basis of accounting. Income tax regulations relating to these can be complex so it is advisable to consult with a CGA for more details. * Because the CRA considers crop advances to be loans, in a better than average year, consider storing all or part of the crop and then taking an advance against it. This advance, which must be applied for early in the year, serves as an effective planning technique for farmers using the cash basis of accounting. www.newscanada.com 7 Twelve-step Christ-centred program for hurts, habits and hang-ups. Start as early as age 25 if possible, even if it is only small amounts. When it comes to savings, the earlier you start, the more lucrative it becomes. As an example, let's compare two $20,000 RRSP investments with a 6% rate of return. The person who invested $1,000 every year for 20 years will end up having 40% more money in their RRSP than the person who waited 10 years before starting to save for their retire- 13 Come and enjoy 'The Torchmen Gospel Quartet' in concert at First Presbyterian Church, 200 Maple St. Doors open at 6:30pm. If it seems enormous to invest $1,000 per year in a RRSP at an age when you must reimburse student loans, pay a mortgage, and deal with the high cost of raising children, remember that this comes down to $20 a week and your total investment will generate advantageous fiscal deductions. One small suggestion: choose automatic weekly deductions from your bank account instead of just planning to register please. Choose an accountant you can count on
As a client, you have the right to choose your accounting professional. When it's your portfolio that is being reviewed, it is important to deal with someone that is reliable and with whom you can discuss openly. Prior to hiring the services of a public accountant, you will need to do your homework. It's advisable that you start by defining your needs before you identify the type of financial advice you are looking for. What are your expectations? Do they mainly concern your income tax return or would you like to learn more about your RRSP, your life insurance, your will... To gain the maximum benefit from the services you require it's essential that you get well acquainted with the professional who will render his services. Be cautious, since it is relatively easy for anyone with only minimum training to claim that they are "accountants". These people may not have the required expertise to give you the best service and owing to their lack of professional liability insurance, they can't provide you with protection. In Canada, only three titles are recognized in accounting: * certified general accountant (CGA), chartered * accountant (CA) and certified management * accountant (CMA). As well, it would be in the best interest of anyone who is drawing any kind of revenue other than a salary, to enlist the services of a tax expert. You may also choose to purchase recognized fiscal planning software. This could be an interesting option for anyone wanting to get their finances in order while learning about the workings of taxation. However, don't expect the software to fully replace the financial advice of a professional.
